Linking from indexes to full-text articles in the BMJ

BMJ

The BMJ ‘s publication policy is to publish articles online continuously.  From these a selection is packaged to make up the print journal.  The citation style of these articles is non-traditional and takes the form title/year/volume/running number e.g BMJ 2008;337:a134 which is different from the standard weekly number of the print journal. Linking from index databases such as Medline (Ovid) is then upset as the link resolver software does not properly recognize the running number with its lower-case letter.  In these cases linking to the full-text of articles from the index database is as follows:

  • Search for articles in the database e.g. Medline (Ovid)
  • Locate the correct article citation
  • Open the full record about the citation and look for the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) field
  • Where it is an “active” link then click this link

The full-text article page will appear.
