Information about Library services

Library Search & GDPR

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will take effect on 25 May 2018.

In order to comply with GDPR, Library Search users may be asked to consent to have some personal data collected by EBSCO (service provider for UEA Library Search).

This personal data is required for the personalised service elements of Library Search e.g. use of the personal “Folder”, saved items, saved searches and checkouts.

Users can refuse consent.  They will still be able to use Library Search but they will not be able to make use of the personalised elements of the service.

Users that have not previously made use of the personalised functions within Library Search, will not get the request.

What personal data is collected?

  • Account information such as login credentials, email and name
  • Saved items, checkouts and saved searches
  • Activity data such as searches, retrievals and link outs
  • Affiliation data

What should I do ?    If you want to continue using the personalised service, you should click “Yes” and consent.
Users can withdraw their consent at any time by contacting privacy@ebsco.com

What if I decline?    You will no longer be able to:

  • Save items to folders and access them
  • See your search history and save searches
  • Checkout EBSCO eBooks

Library loan history and GDPR

The new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) come into force in May.

On Tuesday 20 March 2018, to conform to this new data-protection law, the Library is removing some older data that it has no need to keep, by ‘anonymising’ (removing the link between a transaction and a person, so that the records are no longer ‘personal’); this allows us to keep the transaction itself for stock-use analysis but it is no longer linked to you. We are anonymising loan records older than 10 years, and requests older than 7 years. This will mainly affect long-serving staff, because students, and staff at UEA for less than those periods, will not normally have a loan or request history long enough to be affected.

If you have been at UEA longer than those periods, and wish to see where the change will affect you: go to the Library Catalogue , select the ‘My Account’ option in the top row, log in if necessary (not normally required on UEA desktops), then select ‘Loan History List’ or ‘Hold Requests History’. library account

Currently, these lists may show ‘history’ going back as far as August 2002.  From Easter 2018, loans returned before the end of 2007 will no longer appear in your ‘Loan History List’, and requests completed before the end of 2010 will no longer appear in ‘Hold Requests History’.

Programs on the library pcs

Thanks to Computing Science 1st year student Travis Payne, for mentioning that it would be helpful to have additional programs on the pcs in the library.

Rachel Henderson from the library and Travis met with Alex Pooley from ITCS and we’re pleased to say that the library pcs now include:

Notepad++

Netbeans

Python

PostgreSQL Manager

Don’t forget the library can help you find journal articles and conference papers to give your assignment the edge over others.

How to export your Primo OneSearch e-Shelf

Over the summer 2014, we’ll be launching a new library search tool to replace Primo OneSearch.

To ensure that you do not lose the book, article & journal references that you have saved in Primo, please export your e-Shelf before September 2014:

primo_1

Once logged in, click on e-Shelf

primo_2

Select the items you want to export by ticking the box next to each title. To select all titles, tick the box at the very top of the list.

 primo_3

You can then choose to print the list or e-mail it to yourself

primo_4

Alternatively, you can export the list into EndNote Web by selecting this option from the dropdown menu and then clicking “Go”

primo_5

You can set up an Endnote web account for free by going to https://www.myendnoteweb.com and creating an ‘Endnote Basic’ account.

Please note: you can only export 30 titles at a time to EndNote Web

Improvement to library search services

Over the summer we’ll be launching a new library search tool to replace Primo OneSearch. The new interface will look and feel similar to Primo and will give you:

  • Better quality search results
  • Faster, more reliable access to full-text articles and many of our key research databases
  • A user-friendly experience

To make sure we achieve these aims, we’ll be asking for your help and feedback during the changover period.

We’ll keep you posted about progress on this project with updates here, on the Library news feed and on Twitter.

Sneak preview of new search service

Why are we making this change from Primo?

Feedback from the latest ISD survey indicated that we were not always meeting the expectations of library users. The new search tool we’ve selected offers a clear interface, and enhanced relevancy ranking that will make it easier to quickly find books and articles It also features more intuitive navigation, and enhanced features such as ‘at a glance’ availability.

We hope you will find it an improvement, and we’re looking forward to hearing your feedback on how we can make it work best to serve your academic information needs.

How can I find out more?

We’ll post regular updates here so you can keep up to date with how the project is progressing. If you have any questions, please get in touch with us at eservices@uea.ac.uk
